Great Carpenter Bees (genus Xylocopa) are the largest bees in Australia, and found in northern NSW and higher latitudes. They grow up to 24 mm long, buzz loudly when in flight, and pollinate plants by vibrating the pollen capsules – a specialised process known as buzz pollination.
Carpenter bees burrow into plant fibres including dead wood to make their nests.
